What Is Going To Be In The Bird Dog Training Boot Camp Video Series?
The Bird Dog Training Bootcamp is going to be a very comprehensive series. Starting off from that 8 - 10 months old, or older dog, with a good stop, go and come. Then moving on to our retriever training. We start off by training a hold. This is very important and helps us to start our retriever training quickly. Quickly moving into a place where we are running steady retrieves, delivered to hand, in the very first retrieve session with our dogs. From there we will be working our way through a comprehensive and complete retriever training system.
Some of the things Paul will be covering in this series.
- Hold training
- Conditioning the basic retrieve
- Multiple retrieves
- Water retrieves
- Blind Retrieves
- Retrieving on land, ponds, lakes, rivers and heavy cover
- Running Straight Lines
- Back and sides
- Introduction to gunfire
- Marking off the gun
- Dummy Launchers
- Steadiness training
- Dog blinds
- Walk up and rough shooting
- Hunting waterfowl (ducks and geese) pigeons and upland game
- Hunting in paddocks, layout blinds, ponds, lakes, rivers and more
The style of dog Paul is training in this series is a very steady and practical hunting dog that is great to have around and only adds to our hunts. Steadiness, manners and all the practical skills required to get the job done are all part of it and when we aren't hunting our dogs should be just as comfortable outside in the truck or dog kennel, or inside with friends and family being a great pet. It's up to you. But Paul's training does it all.
The videos in this series are clear, detailed and Paul doesn't leave anything out. He demonstrates and explains everything he does so you not only understand what he is doing to train his dog, but you understand why and how he is doing it so you can do it yourself with your own dog, to a high level.
The practical training videos have everything you need. However Paul is backing these up with more, longer, theory podcast videos. In these theory podcasts Paul will go back over each phase of training in deeper detail, explaining the theory and philosophy behind all of the important steps and phases in training. Some of this content will be a double up. Going back over things for a second or third time in greater detail and in a longer format. Paul has found this to be very helpful for a lot of people following his series.
There will also be The Bird Dog Training Boot Camp Inner Circle FaceBook Page. This will be a closed, private group of only people who are following The Bird Dog Training Boot Camp. Here you can ask questions, share how training is going and talk to other people who are also following this series. This has become another important part of Paul's other courses. WHAT IS IN THE BIRD DOG TRAINING BOOT CAMP NOW?
In this 52 minute video Paul gives a full and detailed introduction to the course telling you everything you need to know to get off to the best start possible.
The Hold Video
The first practical training video is the hold video. The hold video is a 58 minute video explaining and demonstrating the first 4 weeks of training which is training the hold. The training in this first step is very simple and easy once you know how. However this first step is very important and it sets us up to move forward quickly and easily through the rest of this training. This 58 minute video is in 4 main parts.
Equipment you will need for the next part of training
In the first part of this hold video Paul shows you what equipment you will need in the first few weeks of training. Starting off with super easy to get basic stuff so you can start training straight away. Paul also talks about some of the more specialised dummies and bumpers that you will need within the next few weeks so you have time to get those and get organised. Paul will do this all the way through this series. Telling you what you will need in advance so you can get organised and so you don't get stuck not having something when you need it. In some parts of this series Paul will give you simple, basic, cost effective options and techniques as well as some more advanced equipment and processes. He will explain the pros and cons of both and let you decide what you want to do.
In this series Paul is going to go over good basic, yet solid and effective ways of training a bird dog for those who want to keep things simple and get the job done. He is also going to go over some more advanced equipment like remote dummy launchers and the processes around things like that to give everyone all of the options.
Explaining The Hold Training
Even in most practical training videos, Paul starts with explaining this next step of training, the theory behind it and why and how we are going to do it. It is important to know why you are doing each step and to understand why it is important and the key steps before you even start. Paul does this a lot all the way through this series and the basic white board work really helps to pull the ideas together.
Working With Miko
Miko is the dog Paul is working with in this series and he is demonstrating all of the training with her. In this part of the hold video Paul shows you all of the techniques, reading, timing, pressure, praise and all the key points to this training. This segment working with Miko is 30 minutes long and in it Paul demonstrates and explains in detail how to do this training. There is a lot there. Once again, this training is simple and easy once you know how to do it and in this segment Paul shows you exactly how he does it. As with all of Paul's training he is constantly sharing tips, techniques and principles that transfer over to all facets of dog training. You are constantly learning and relearning while watching these videos.
Time Frames, Frequencies And Wrapping Up
Most practical training videos will end with another quick session back at the white board to recap on the training you have just seen and to go over time frames and frequencies so you know how often to train, how many drills to do and for how long. Pacing is very important in dog training. Particularly in the retrieve and Paul is talking about this a lot on this series. These wrap up white board sessions often talk about the next step in training, what to expect and what is coming up. Paul has a great process laid out for making this series and it is coming together very quickly and effectively now. These practical sessions are very clear and structured. They go into good detail to explain and demonstrate everything you need to know. They are designed to set you up to go out and start training successfully to a high level without missing anything out.
The Bird Dog Boot Camp Companion Podcast - The Hold, Conditioning, The Delivery And The Retrieve
In this 1 hour 40 minute podcast Paul talks about the whole bird dog boot camp series again, what it is and how it is going to work. Then he also goes into a lot of detail on how we are starting training in this series. How starting with an older dog that already has a good stop, go and come is actually a great way to train a retriever and how we are starting off the whole training by conditioning the hold, setting up the delivery and how ultimately, the delivery is the retrieve. This is an interesting and important take on a great way to train a retriever. If you have already watched the introduction and the hold video then a lot of this podcast is a double up. However going over this stuff from multiple angles a couple of times can be really good and there are some great points here that aren't in any of the other videos and podcasts.
